Rooftop at the Metropolitain Museum

After a walk through Central Park, I arrived at the Metropolitain. I enjoyed walking through the Impressionist Gallery and although I could have spent days and days exploring all the different halls, I made my way to the rooftop garden where I truly enjoyed a "take my breath away" moment. The 360° panoramic view of the entire New York skyline. It was truly impressive. I sat up there, enjoying the beautiful sky for some time, and was met by my Jr. high-school friend, and fellow artist, Hans Wolf. Hans has been in New York for a few years now, pursuing his art career and making a name for himself.

I left the Rockerfeller Plaza area just after 8:30... grabbed some coffee & a croissant, and then took a nice long walk along 5th Avenue. I headed toward Central Park.

I enjoyed window shopping, and the beautiful displays at Cartier, Tiffany's, and all the top named Jewelers.

I enjoyed the early morning walk along the foot paths. Tree lined with dappled sunlight... I can feel some painting inspiration coming from these pictures.

Several birds made said good morning atop the back of a park bench. This is the only one that stood still... but it was one of about 2 dozen. I'll find out what species it is... bigger than a sparrow.

I passed by the entrance to the Central Park Zoo. I could probably sit outside and sketch and paint all day as it was so beautiful... but that will have to wait til my next visit. I had quite a long walk ahead of me to get to the MET...

I passed by the Clock at the entrance to the Children's Zoo, just in time to hear it ring.. It really has a charming sound to it.

If these steps are familiar, just think of any NY based Law and Order type of program, and these are the paths that were on a recent episode... There were many paths and tunnels that would have qualified for being "perfect crime" locations...

Of course, being there on a nice, quiet, Thursday morning, I was happy to see and hear crowds of school children on walking field trips, or playing soccer on the fields. The wildlife was alive... foraging squirrels obviously in "gotta work" mode before the winter snow falls.

I was very happy to find the bronze statue of "Alice in Wonderland" in the park. Being a collector of all things Alice... it really brought a smile to my face.

October 20th, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my two good friends, Heather & Rachael.

Heather is back in L.A.... and I thought sending her a great big Happy Birthday at the TODAY was better than a generic card...

I also had a sign for the kids and John! According to my mom, they saw it at about 8:30!!!

Watching the TODAY show live is a neat experience. The Team comes outside to meet and greet, and then deliver the news, or introduce a segment.

Here, Al Roker says good morning to the folks around me, and shakes our hands... He is very personable. Matt Lauer was also genuinely friendly and polite and interested in talking to the fans.

Ann Curry was obviously suffering from a bad cold and refrained from shaking hands, but chatted with a group of ladies across from me with genuine curiosity. None of them were "shallow or fake"...

The whole team waits for the producer to give them the cue to introduce the next segment...

An interview with ORLANDO Bloom.

Nothing like having to stand still and not do anything akward or embarassing as you KNOW that the camera is on you... Yes, if you look in between Al and Ann, the camera was facing directly at me.

Matt chats with some visitors from Scotland, and we got to hear about his recent family vacation there... that was one of his favorite places. We also got to hear a "plug" for his upcoming "Where it the World" series (in November)...

A Rainy Wednesday and a Trip to Brooklyn...

On Wednesday Rachael, Tina and I awoke to beautiful and terrential rain. Our thoughts of walking across the Brooklyn Bridge were a little "drowned" out. However, that's not going to stop 3 of us from having a good day.

We had a simple morning. Grabbing breakfast near Grand Central Station, which is the ideal place for any traveller to start as they offer everything from full cooked sit down meals, to quick grab and go pastries. We opted for simple eggy omtlete fare and toast, and we were on our way.

I had reserved tickets for us to visit the 9/11 Memorial, and despite the rain, decided to continue on with that plan. We took a yellow cab (something one must do on a rainy day in NY).... and I laughed when Tina put on her best "Sarah Jessica Parker" wave and jumped out to flag one down... it was so funny... and perfect... as we immediately got a Taxi.

Soon after we were going through the security check and navigated our way to the memorial site. I took time to walk independently through the space... realizing that it was 13 years to the very day that I had been there with John (the day after we got engaged) and had been laying down on a bench looking up at the twin towers. Now I was looking up, at the Freedom Tours that are climbing high and are being build at an impressive rate.

It has taken me a while to describe in words what I felt walking through the memorial. A deep sense of awe.... Remembering how it was 13 years ago during my last visit.... i just felt a profound sense of juxtaposition. Sadness knowing that what once was there, the people, the lives, the way of life, can never be replaced, or fixed... and a proud sense of accomplishment that these new freedom towers are being built, and are a symbol of strength... and are "rising" from this sadness.

and then voted that the rest of the day should be spent in dryer conditions. We were soaked to the bones and were glad for a warm cafe and a cup of coffee.

Tina and Rachael opted to spend the afternoon shopping, and I decided to make this the afternoon to visit with some friends who live in the area.

I had the opportunity to meet up with a high school friend, Ricardo. It was raining pretty hard so the idea of walking across the Brooklyn Bridge will have to wait until a future trip. But a subway trip into Brooklyn was certainly an alternative. I navigated my way and then arrived and was greeted by Ricardo. We walked through several streets and then turned onto a charming street of row-houses.. traditional Brownstones. The trees were wet, and rustling in the rain, and the streets were shiny, wet, and just beautiful. I enjoyed hearing the sounds of the wet footsteps as we walked and talked.

We got to Ricardo's place which was a quaint old traditional, with a lot of old charm. I was forwarned that their place was still undergoing rennovations.. (been there, done that... um, yeah, I get it)... and was then greeted by his two lovely and friendly dogs.

After a quik rest we headed off and he gave me a driving tour... the nickel and dime special, of Brooklyn.. turning down and up borough after borough. Old worlds charm, giving me the details of each neighborhood... the architecture, the history,... it was wonderful.

Eventually we stopped at a quaint little Peruvian Restaurant, tucked away within the neighborhood.... LUZ

I went on a culinary vacation and my tastebuds are extremely happy. To drink we had the above pictured Pisco Sour Mango! To eat we had a selection of tapas... Shrimp and Crab Ceviche, a type of corn cake, maise, and some beans and saffron, tartare, and the pork w/ granola & mandarin oranges with citrus dipping sauce. Oh, Wow!!! Any foodies out there? Put this on your hit list...

After eating we continued the driving tour... around the Brooklyn Bridge, the Docks,... (I'll need to consult a map and note all the different neighborhoods)... but we saw the Arts districts, the Fashion districts, and many areas that used to be industry and have now become a new mecca for artists and businesses alike... so cool, and just the type of stuff I love!

New York - Day Two - Night Time at Times Square

Inspiration!

After a long day walking around NYC... it was time for a Caramel Mocha from Starbucks and a sit down... so I wandered my way over to Times Square and just enjoyed people watching... I took a BUNCH of photos, and then sat down and did some sketching & watercolors. I'm really starting to enjoy working in this style.

There were tall buildings and bright lights in every direction. Lots of people at ground level, and just massive amounts of sound. It wasn't particularily noisy, but just an enjoyable sound of hustle and bustle. Even the sound of the traffic at this position was tolerable, and not annoying. It is how one would expect New York to be.

In Times Square are these sitting areas for anyone to use. I sat in one of these semi-comfortable red chairs for a time and took photos, watched the world go by, and then took out my paints.

I narrowed in a combination of images to create the Watercolor of "Times Square at Night". I'm pleased with how the reflection in the skyscraper to the Right of the image turned out. The most difficult part of the image was deciding what bright colors to use for the lights as they changed constantly... making it almost impossible to capture properly. That is why I opted to NOT show any commercial images in the square blocks of light, but just colored squares... this makes it a little more abstract, but it's more accurate in this picture. What is difficult to see in the photo as well is the Crystal Ball that drops at New Year... I had no idea that it was kept up there all year (until almost the end of December)...

The rest of the week will include: more images of Central Park, the 911 Memorial, The Brooklyn Bridge, and perhaps more pictures from Rockerfeller Plaza. The ice-skating rink opened today, and I plan on stopping by there a few more times before I leave. I've got to take pictures of the ice-skaters...

New York -- Beneath the Rock - Watercolor

After a red-eye flight from LAX to NYC, I have found a quiet place to sit and watch New York come alive. As I sit and paint, I can hear a variety of languages... tourists, business men and women, and several curious pigeons.

New York... at Rockerfeller Center Plaza...

During the course of the morning, I took reference photos.

This helps me work with the changing light. Even within a few minutes the reflective lighting off a tall skyscraper can change the entire image. Look at the intensity of the Yellow Traffic Signal...

And, as luck would have it... I decided to place a man in a shirt and tie in the forground to create a visual story... and as I was just about to pack up and take a break for lunch, this man in a light business suit walked toward me. How perfect. The guy in the blue suit had walked past about 2 hours earlier and I never got a photo... so I was very happy with this coincidence.

Roses are growing in my sketchbook again.

And in honor of Melissa I am once again embarking on the Rose Project in October. This year I will produce 31 original pieces of artwork... featuring Roses and/or Peony's... some will be small miniatures, and others will be quite large. All of them will be original. And each is available for purchase with proceeds benefitting Breast Cancer Awareness Education and Research.

I have also selected some of the images from past projects to include as Notecard collections. Please check back often as I will be constantly updating this project!

Plein Air Painting & Color Studies - Madrona Marsh

The morning light at the Madrona Marsh in summer is breathtaking. I go in before 10:00 while it is still quiet, and listen to the ducks quacking and the birds chirping... I look around and watch a duck happily eating breakfast nearby. Then she went for a swim and posed so that I could take a photo of her as she swam between the tules.

I had my watercolors with me and did some quick sketches and color studies of the tules, ducks and songbirds. I was thrilled to watch some hawks above, and then noticed a huge long wingspan of a "?" fly over my head, and gracefully swoop and land in the pool (just to the other side of where the duck is in the photo above).... Unfortuantely, I was not able to get a good photo of this bird It may have been a stork? I don't know yet what type of water bird it was, yet, but it was amazing and beautiful.... It was long, like a heron, and will research to find out exactly what it was...

I did walk around more to find other birds, more ducks, and a white egret.

then another layer of white, with layers of each color applied. Texture and structure is added as each layer dries.

Old Town Temecula Plein Air Festival.....

Painting in the Wine Garden at Villa Campanela in Old Town Temecula

On Friday afternoon, June 24th, I arrived in Temecula where I attended and participated in the annual Plein Air Painting Festival. I scoped out the Old Town on Friday evening... took some photos of different buildings and got some ideas of where I would like to start my day on Saturday morning.

There were several old buildings, and new buildings in the style of the old buildings, plenty of charm and yes, plenty of places to taste wine & cheese.

Friday Evening: A wine flight & samples of cheese on the patio of the Temecula Valley Wine & Cheese Company gave me some time to enjoy and loosly paint some botanicals, inspired by the planter boxes that were in front of me.

Saturday Morning... My first stop was outside THE LITTLE VIKING: Scandanavian Shop.
The shop owners were very polite and we shared polite and fun conversation througout the morning. After several test sketches, I settled on the view of the porch, with the gentleman sitting drinking his coffee. It was a pleasant start to the weekend.

Saturday Afternoon: I walked into the garden behind the Old Town Temecula Wine & Cheese Garden at Villa Camponela. It was a pleasant afternoon, away from the heat, and in the shade. No wind, no crowds, and just hours of quiet time with me, myself, and a glass of wine. What could be more enjoyable?

Kidspace Museum - Pasadena

Today I accompanied my sons 1st Grade Class on a Field Trip to the Kidspace Museum. I really enjoyed watching all the kids just play and explore the area and was able to relax and chat with other parents throughout the day. As I was walking up one of the paths, I came across this native plant bush. It was active with busy bees and I was happy to get a photo or two. I do not know the formal name for this plant, however, I refer to it as the "Sunny Side Up Flower" as I always think the flower reminds me of a fried egg...

This Tudor Style Building has been on the Pier as long as I can remember. It was "New Tony's" for a while, and is now home to RIZ, and French - Japanese fusion restaurant. I've eaten there a few times and if you have a nice quiet evening to plan, and are not afraid to spend a few dollars for the added ambience, then you won't be disappointed. The food menu stretches from "California Cuisine, Sushi, and French Favorites" with an assortment of specials (depending on the night of the week)...
